HANOVER, N.H.—No. 8/7 Dartmouth men's hockey earned a weekend split on Sunday with a 4-1 win over Arizona State of the NCHC in the second game of the 36th Annual Ledyard Classic.
The Big Green struck just 8:51 into the game as Brock Cummings got his second goal of the year. The duo of CJ Foley and Nathan Morin forced a turnover in neutral zone and Foley picked up the loose puck and went on a two on one with Cummings. Foley sauced the puck across to Cummings who beat the goalie far side for his second of the year. Foley picked up his seventh assist of the season while Morin picked up his fifth.
At the 10:01 mark, the Sun Devils tied the game at one and the teams went to the locker room tied at one after 20 minutes.
There were just 11 shots in the first period with Dartmouth having five shots on goal, faceoffs were tied at seven.
8:13 into the second period, the Big Green took the lead and never looked back. The Big Green has pressure in the ASU zone and Hank Cleaves picked up a loose puck and gave it to Cam MacDonald. MacDonald fed a pass across to Brock Devlin at the right point, Devlin fired a pass to MacDonald who drove the net. MacDonald redirected the puck into the top of the net to give the Big Green a 2-1 lead.
Dartmouth took the 2-1 lead to the locker room after outshooting ASU 12-6 in the second period. The Big Green also dominated the faceoff circle in the middle frame, winning 12 of 15 faceoffs.
With 15:38 left in the third period, the Big Green took a two-goal lead. Nathan Morin had the puck deep in the ASU zone and rung it to Devlin at the left point. Devlin fired the puck towards the net, Morin drove the net and tipped the shot that was turned away. He then rung the rebound off the post before banging home the rebound for his seventh goal of the year. Devlin notched his second assist while Cummings picked up his third assist on the play.
With 3:35 left in the third period, ASU pulled its goalie for the extra skater. It took just seven seconds for the Big Green to convert. H. Cleaves won the faceoff back to Eric Charpentier. Charpentier looked to clear it off the glass, but after a weird deflection it came back to H. Cleaves. Cleaves fired it the length of the ice for his sixth goal of the year. Charpentier notched his fourth assist.
Emmett Croteau made 19 saves as he improved to 6-1-0 on the season. The junior leads the country with a .953 save percentage and a 1.14 goals against average this season.
The first-year trio of Morin, Devlin, and Cummings combined for six points on Sunday with each of them having two points. H. Cleaves also turned in a multi-point performance in the win.
Dartmouth dominated the faceoff circle by winning 63.3% of draws. H. Cleaves went 14-8 while Morin added nine wins on 13 faceoffs.
The Big Green outshot the Sun Devils 25-20 while also blocking 13 shots. Charpentier, Joshua Schenk, Cooper Cleaves, and Jack Silverberg each blocked two shots.
It is the first time in program history that Dartmouth has defeated Arizona State, all-time the Big Green are 1-1-2 against ASU.
Dartmouth finishes non-conference play with a 6-2-0 record, Sunday marked the first time since Dec. 18, 2019, that Dartmouth defeated an NCHC team.
Dating back to the start of the 2024-25 season, the Big Green are 21-1-1 when scoring four or more goals including 8-0-0 this season.
The Green and White finish 2025 with a 23-11-0 record.
The Big Green return to conference play to open 2026. Dartmouth travels to Princeton on Friday, Jan. 2 at 7 PM before closing the road trip against Quinnipiac on Saturday, Jan. 3 at 7 PM.
