HANOVER, N.H.—No. 10 Dartmouth men's hockey improved to 10-0-0 on Saturday night with a 6-1 win over Yale to complete the weekend sweep.
The Big Green opened the scoring just 8:06 into the first period. Dartmouth had pressure in the Yale zone as Nikita Nikora fed the puck to Colin Grable at the point. Grable fired it across to Eric Charpentier who threw a wrister towards the net. Andrew Clarke was battling in front and tipped the puck home for his first colligate goal. Charpentier notched his second assist of the year while it was Grable's third assist.
Over seven minutes later, at the 15:22 mark, the Big Green doubled their lead. The trio of Hayden Stavroff, Hank Cleaves, and Cam MacDonald broke the puck out of the Big Green zone and went on the attack. Stavroff dropped the puck to H. Cleaves who stopped in the near circle too look for a pass. He found MacDonald in the slot, MacDonald fended off a defender before sliding a no look pass to Stavroff who buried his 12th goal of the year and fifth of the weekend. Both MacDonald and H. Cleaves notched their eighth assists of the season on the play.
The Big Green led 2-0 after 20 minutes of play while outshooting Yale, 15-2. Dartmouth also doubled up the Bulldogs in the faceoff circle 10-5 in the first frame.
Dartmouth started the second period on the power play and took advantage just 1:10 into the period. The top power play unit of H. Cleaves, Jack Silverberg, Stavroff, Nikora, and CJ Foley had the power play set up in the Yale zone. Nikora found H. Cleaves on the goal line and fed him a pass, H. Cleaves one touched it to Silverberg in the low slot. Silverberg one-timed the puck, the shot was saved but the rebound found Stavroff who roofed home his 13th goal of the season. It was Silverberg's second assist of the year and H. Cleaves' ninth of the season.
At the 15:14 mark of the middle frame, the Big Green made it 4-0 as Grable notched his third goal of the season. After an icing left five exhausted Yale players on the ice for a faceoff deep in the Yale zone, the Big Green took advantage. H. Cleaves won the faceoff back and Stavroff poked the puck to Charpentier at the point. Charpentier found Grable at the right point and fed him the puck. Grable hesitated before releasing a wrister that found the back of the cage.
The Big Green led 4-0 heading into the third period, through 40 minutes of play the Big Green held a 25-10 advantage in shots.
It took just two minutes and 31 seconds for the Big Green to score in the third period. The H. Cleaves, Stavroff, and MacDonald trio struck again on the transition. Stavroff found MacDonald in the middle and fed him the puck. MacDonald found a wide open H. Cleaves in the right circle and passed him the puck. H. Cleaves blasted home his fifth goal of the year while MacDonald notched his ninth assist, Stavroff picked up his seventh assist and fourth point of the night.
With 12:15 left in the third period, Dartmouth scored its sixth goal. Jason Stefanek battled in the Yale zone for the puck before it found Joshua Schenk's stick. Schenk looked to deke a defender but was checked, the loose puck found Charpentier pinching in. Charpentier ripped home his fourth goal of the season. Schenk notched his first assist of the season while it was Stefanek's fifth of his first season at Dartmouth.
With 2:48 left in the third period, Yale broke up the shutout.
Emmett Croteau improved to 5-0-0 in net for Dartmouth as he made 15 saves. He has a 0.80 goals against average with a .965 save percentage in five games.
The Big Green outshot the Bulldogs 34-16 in the game while winning the faceoff battle 26-23.
Stavroff led Dartmouth with four points while both Charpentier and H. Cleaves had three points. Charpentier also blocked a team high five shots.
15 players had points this weekend for the Big Green including seven who had multiple points. Stavroff had nine points with six goals and three assists while H. Cleaves had seven points on two goals and five assists. The Big Green outscored Brown and Yale 13-4 across the two games.
Dartmouth has two games left before the holiday break. The Big Green host Army on Friday, Dec. 12 at 7 PM at Thompson Arena. Fans are encouraged to bring new teddy bears to be tossed on the ice after the first Dartmouth goal. Following the game against Army, the Big Green travel to UNH to take on the Wildcats on Sunday, Dec. 14 at 4 PM.
