BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Dartmouth softball team dropped a pair of competitive contests against Purdue and Florida Atlantic on Saturday on Day 2 of the Joan Joyce Classic.
One highlight at the plate was
Alaana Panu, who tallied four hits over the two games, finishing 4-for-6.
GAME 1: Purdue 9, Dartmouth 6
Purdue jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning behind three hits and a Dartmouth error. The inning included an RBI double from Sage Scarmar and two-run double from Jordyn Ramos to make the score 4-0.
The Boilermakers added one onto their lead in the second. Dartmouth then got on the board in the top of the fourth as a
Scarlet Niles single to center scored Panu.
Purdue responded with three in the bottom of the frame to take an 8-1 advantage, but the Big Green wouldn't go away quietly. A three-run fifth inning and two-run sixth pulled Dartmouth within 8-6. Panu had an RBI single in both the fifth and sixth innings to pace the offense.
However, the Boilermakers added a run in the sixth before retiring the Big Green 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh to erase any thoughts of a comeback.
Panu finished game one a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored. Ben-Ezra and
Olivia Schramm had two hits as well, each finishing 2-for-4, respectively. In the circle,
Jensin Hall entered in relief and was strong, pitching 2.2 innings while allowing just two hits and one run while strikeout out two.
GAME 2: Florida Atlantic 2, Dartmouth 0
Game two was a pitcher's dual with Florida Atlantic scoring the game's only runs in the fourth and fifth innings. The Big Green posted their first of two game-two hits in the second inning when
Leila Hennessy had a two-out single and advanced to second on a wild pitch, but she was stranded there.
The Owls' Kiley Channell led off the fourth inning with a triple, with the next batter Jesiana Mora driving her in with a single. Hall then retired the next three batters in succession to minimize the damage.
Three hits in the fifth inning led to an insurance run and 2-0 Florida Atlantic lead.
The Big Green threatened in the sixth, with two on via an error and hit, but Florida Atlantic pitcher Autumn Courtney got out of the jam.
Panu and Hennessy accounted for Dartmouth's two hits in the nightcap, each finishing 1-for-3 at the plate. Hall, who didn't allow a hit until two outs in the third, pitched all six innings. She allowed two runs (both earned) with three strikeouts and one walk.
