HANOVER, N.H.—The Dartmouth men's hockey team secured home ice advantage in the opening round of the ECAC Tournament on Saturday with a 2-1 win over Union.
The first period saw hard checks and a combined 11 shots between the two teams. Dartmouth controlled most of the offense by outshooting Union 8-3 in the opening 20 minutes.
The Garnet Chargers charged out of the locker room in the second period but it was Dartmouth who struck first. At the 12:54 mark of the period the Big Green went to work in the offensive zone. John Fusco pinched on the right point and redirected the puck to Jack Silverberg in the high slot. Silverberg found Eric Charpentier on the left point, Charpentier took a wrist shot through traffic that found the back of the net. Cam MacDonald was set up in front of the netminder with a screen. J. Fusco picked up his ninth assist of the season while Silverberg notched his fifth of the year.
Despite being outshot 10-7 in the second period, the Big Green led 1-0 after 40 minutes of play.
Dartmouth looked to add to its lead early in the third period and did just that. At the 1:26 mark Cooper Flinton fed a touch pass to Luke Haymes who had speed coming into the Union zone. Haymes drove to the front the net and fed the puck to MacDonald who was alone on the weak side. MacDonald ripped a quick shot past the goalie for his sixth goal of the season. For Flinton it was 11th assist while it was Haymes' fourth.
At the 3:50 mark of the third, Union got on the board with a screen shot from the point.
Union was held to just six shots in the third as Dartmouth held on to its one goal lead as the final buzzer went.
Dartmouth outshot Union 24-19 as Emmett Croteau made 18 saves in the win, he is now 8-4-0 this season.
The Big Green won the faceoff battle 26-25 with Steven Townley winning 57.9% of faceoffs on 19 faceoffs. Haymes took seven faceoffs and went 5-2 in the circle.
Union had three power plays in the game, Dartmouth limited the Garnet Chargers to just five shots.
Dartmouth blocked 15 shots in the win, Braiden Dorfman, Tim Busconi, and Tucker McRae each had two blocked shots.
It is the first time since the 2014-15 season that Dartmouth has swept Union in a regular season series.
Following the game, the Big Green honored their seven seniors in John Fusco, Steven Townley, Braiden Dorfman, Sean Chisholm, Trym Lokkeberg, Ian Pierce, and Nate Morgan.
With the win Dartmouth clinched home ice in the opening round of the ECAC Tournament.
The Big Green sit in fifth place of the ECAC standings and just one spot out of a first round bye. Dartmouth is four points back of Union and Colgate while being tied with Cornell at 33 points. The Big Green have the tiebreaker over both Cornell and Union.
Dartmouth closes out the regular season next weekend starting on Feb. 28 at Brown at 7 PM. The Big Green then travel to Yale for a 7 PM start on Saturday to close out the regular season. Dartmouth has the opportunity to win the Ivy League title against Brown and Yale. Three points gives the Big Green a share of the title while four or more points would give Dartmouth its first sole Ivy League title since the 1979-80 season.
