HANOVER, N.H.—Dartmouth men's lacrosse player Mason Morel and Dartmouth softball player Alaana Panu have been named this weeks The Richards Group Athletes of the Week.
Each week, DartmouthSports.com will spotlight two outstanding student-athletes, one male, one female – as Athletes of the Week.
Mason Morel, Senior, Atlanta, Ga., Goaltender, Men's Lacrosse
Named the Ivy League's Defensive Player of the Week, Morel made 14 saves in the Big Green's 9-8 overtime win over No. 16 Penn on Saturday. Morel stopped seven-of-nine shots sent his way after halftime, including a save on the opening possession of overtime. In the process, he helped Dartmouth pick up first win over Penn since 2013 and first win at Penn since 2005. It was the Big Green's first win over a nationally-ranked opponent since 2005 as they are off to their best start (7-1) since 2003. For the season, Morel owns a 60.3 save percentage, which is seventh in the nation. Over his last three games, he has 47 saves, allowing just 22 goals (68.1 save percentage).
Alaana Panu, Senior, Los Gatos, Calif., Outfielder, Softball
Panu had a huge weekend in the team's sweep of Brown, batting .500 with a 1.083 slugging percentage and six RBIs. The hits included a drilled three-run home run that put the Big Green ahead in the top of the 8th inning of game one. She hit for the cycle over the three games in her 12 at bats with 2 singles, 2 doubles, a triple and a home run, and led the team in runs scored and RBIs. She had an on base percentage of .667 this weekend. Panu had a 1.00 fielding percentage with four put outs this weekend, making some critical catches on a very windy weekend in Providence. She leads the team in most offensive categories and leads the Ivy League in stolen bases.
