Big Green Put Forth Strong Effort at Cornell

Dartmouth is victorious in the 2V
ITHACA, N.Y. — The fifth-ranked Dartmouth men's lightweight rowing team put forth another impressive effort on Saturday at fourth-ranked Cornell, with the varsity eight losing by less than two seconds with the 2V picking up a strong victory.
"A great day of racing for the D150s in Ithaca," said head coach Trevor Michelson. "In the JV, a blistering start powered the crew to a length lead at the thousand. Cornell charged hard in the final few hundred meters, but we were able to hold on.
"It was a historic win for our second eight, possibly the first victory over Cornell at this regatta in 20 years," Michelson continued. "It has not been an easy road for this boat, but their determination and stubbornness day in and day out has allowed them to unlock a new level of speed. Excited to see how these guys progress as the Eastern Sprints approaches."
The second varsity eight posted a time of 5:59.2, ahead of Cornell in 6:01.5.
The varsity eight finished with a time of 5:42.9, just behind the Big Red's time of 5:41.2.
"In the varsity, it was a true welterweight bout, with both crews throwing punches the entire way down the course," said Michelson. "Cornell jumped to an early lead, then Dartmouth took a seat with 1,250 meters to go. In the final 500, Cornell charged back and mounted a sprint we could not match. They ended up finishing about four seats ahead.
"Another close finish that we landed on the wrong side of, but I'm proud of how we battled," Michelson continued. "We have speed to find and room to improve and I am excited to get back to work as we prepare for Columbia next weekend."
The third varsity eight posted a time of 6:37.1, behind the Big Red's 3V (6:03.4) and 4V (6:17.8).
"Our third eight raced a very deep Cornell team, unable to match their speed," said Michelson. "It was a solid pull from the crew, and I am happy with how they continue to progress."
The Big Green return to action next Sunday at Columbia.
