HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth softball team fell to Princeton in the weekend rubber match 14-6 on Sunday morning.
Â
Justice Malone went 2-2,
Leila Hennessy went 2-3 with two RBIs and
Olivia Schramm knocked in three runs for the Big Green. The starting pitcher,
Jensin Hall, recorded four strikeouts.
Â
Princeton got on the board in the first inning after the bases were loaded off walks and a sacrifice fly allowed them to score a run. A pop out and a strike out got the Big Green out of the inning, 1-0 Tigers. Two walks in the bottom of the inning allowed
Faby Serna and Malone to get on base. Schramm ripped a home run to right center and gave Dartmouth the lead, 3-1 Big Green.
Â
The Tigers added a run in the top of the second, 3-2 Princeton. The top of the third brought more runs to the board for Princeton and they were able to extend to a 4-3 lead off three hits. Hall was able to punch out the final batter of the inning.
Â
Dartmouth came right back at the Tigers in the bottom of the third. A Serna walk kicked things off. That was followed by a Malone single, and a
Leila Hennessy single up the middle that brought Serna home.
Ava Davis, who pinch ran for Hennessy, attempted to steal second and forced an overthrow from the catcher that sent Malone home, 5-4 Big Green. A one-two-three inning out of the Tigers followed in the top of the fourth.
Â
In the bottom of the fifth, Malone hit a double and advanced to third on a deep fly out from Schramm. Hennessy dropped a perfectly placed bunt and allowed Malone to score, just getting under the tag, 6-4 Big Green.
Â
The top of the sixth allowed for more Princeton runs. Three hits gave the Tigers a 7-4 lead and forced a pitching change for the Big Green with
Rachel McCarroll replacing Hall. A two-run homer put the Tigers ahead 9-6. They were able to add three more runs before
Isabel Kirby came to the circle for McCarroll, 12-6. Two more runners came in before the inning was over and Princeton held a 14-6 lead and the eventual victory.
