WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – Making its first appearance in the NCAA Championship since 2011, the Dartmouth women's rowing team put forth a strong effort, with all three of its boats taking fourth place in its heats, all narrowly missing a berth into their respective AB semifinals on Saturday. The crews will all row in the CD semifinals on Saturday in a quest to finish as high as 13th nationally.
"It was everybody's first NCAAs racing, and cool to see them race at this new level and see this level of competition for the first time," said
John Graves, The Elizabeth C. McNabb Head Coach of Women's Rowing. "The crews did a really good competing and having their best racing."
The varsity eight began the day by coming in fourth with a time of 6:19.071, which was less than two seconds behind California in third (6:17.191). The Big Green finished ahead of Boston University (6:36.220) and Fairfield (6:56.400).
"Seeing the varsity go toe-to-toe with Cal was pretty fun to watch," said Graves. "They were disappointed not to make it through, but a pretty amazing race out of them and really proud of them with how they never backed down all the way down the race course. I'm excited to see them finish this championship out at a really high level."
The 2V similarly finished fourth, posting a time of 6:39.865, only trailing Texas (6:17.257), Yale (6:19.807) and Syracuse (6:23.170). The Big Green defeated Boston University (6:47.395) and Rhode Island (7:00.110), who finished fifth and sixth, respectively.
The varsity four's time of 7:15.840 was just over three seconds behind third-place Harvard and ahead of Northeastern (7:33.360) and Rhode Island (7:57.895).
Each Dartmouth boat will row in the CD semifinals on Saturday, with the varsity eight at 9:04 a.m., 2V at 9:20 and varsity four at 9:44.
