SALEM, Mass. – On Monday, junior
Sophie Thai competed in the Mass Golf United States Golf Association (USGA) Qualifier, looking for a spot in the U.S. Women's Open.
The 36-hole tournament took place at Salem Country Club as Thai battled through wind, rain and fog to a third-place finish with a 149 (+5).
Her finish secures her a spot as the second alternate for the U.S. Women's Open.
In the first round, Thai collected one birdie, posting a 77 (+5). On the second round, she finished with an even 72, sinking four birdies, three of which were on the front nine.
Thai's overall 149 (+5) was only two strokes behind the second place finisher, Anna Morgan, and six strokes behind the winner and qualifier, Celeste Dao.

Alex Kirk said he was proud of his golfer's performance Monday.
"USGA events are the biggest stage," Kirk said. "I'm proud of Sophie's effort to compete. Being an alternate is a huge success."
The U.S. Women's Open will take place from May 26 through June 1 at Erin Hills in Erin, Wisconsin.
