Women's Soccer Shuts Out Merrimack For Opening Day Victory

HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth women's soccer team opened its season with a 7-0 victory over Merrimack at Burnham Field on Friday evening. With this dominant win, the Big Green improves to 8-0 in all-time matchups against the Warriors.Â
First-year forwards Michal Cagungun and Maeve Theobald, along with sophomore transfer Stephanie Lathrop, shined in their Dartmouth debuts, with each scoring two goals. As a team, the Big Green outshot the Warriors 31-5.Â
Dartmouth opened scoring in the 30th minute when Theobald found the back of the net for her first collegiate goal. In the 44th minute, senior midfielder Mary Lundregan passed to Cagungun for her first career goal, taking a 2-0 lead going into halftime.Â
Lathrop wasted no time entering the second half, scoring back-to-back goals within the first two minutes of play. Dartmouth's momentum continued to grow in the 51st minute when Theobald fired yet another shot into the net.Â
Merrimack attempted to lessen the lead by taking three shots in the second half, but first-year goalkeeper Paige Knoth saved two of them. Despite their efforts, sophomore midfielder Lourdes Lauterborn rocketed a shot to extend Dartmouth's lead.Â
In the 72nd minute, first-year midfielder Nadia Young connected with Cagungun for her second goal of the night, ultimately securing a 7-0 victory over Merrimack.Â
The Big Green will travel to New Britain, Conn., on Sunday to face Central Connecticut State University at 2 p.m.
