Big Green Wrap Up Successful Opening Weekend of Preseason Camp

Season opener is set for Saturday, Sept. 20 vs. New Hampshire
HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth football team kicked off preseason camp this weekend with practices number one and two. After the first-years reported on Thursday and the first full team meetings on Friday, the Big Green hit the practice field on Saturday and Sunday morning as they begin their quest for a fifth Ivy League Championship in the last six seasons.
A theme early on has been the hunger and excitement to be back on the field.
"Guys came out ready to roll," said Sammy McCorkle, Robert L. Blackman Head Football Coach. "Guys were here early and you could just feel the energy."
The Big Green lost a number of talented seniors to graduation, including All-Ivy honorees, but return plenty of talent as well — veterans who will look to lead the way for the first-years and sophomores. Among the returnees is a trio of preseason All-Americans: tight end Chris Corbo, offensive lineman Delby Lemieux and kicker Owen Zalc.
"Our older group of guys did a good job of setting a tempo [this opening weekend]," said McCorkle. "We have a lot of new guys in positions that we're expecting to step up."
Dartmouth returns several starters, while several other backups from last season look poised to jump into more prominent roles in 2025. At the foundation of success will be the Big Green's work in the offseason.
"A lot of guys since spring practice have done a phenomenal job in the offseason training, getting themselves physically ready," said McCorkle. "And you could just see that today [after practice #1]. Especially at the line of scrimmage on both sides, guys were being aggressive, coming at each other and the conditioning across the board was really good.
"I thought our tempo was also good," McCorkle continued. "The whole practice, guys weren't dragging around. And that's huge."
Lemieux, a captain along with wide receiver Daniel Haughton and defensive back Sean Williams, said the Big Green picked up right where they left off in the spring.
"Guys were in the mindset that this isn't practice one," he said. "This is practice 13. Guys are ready. Guys are flying around. Sure there was a little rust to knock off, but guys are excited to be out here and now it's win the rest of the day and get ready for tomorrow."
Discipline is always key, but especially a focus early in camp.
"There are going to be mistakes here and there, but we have to do a good job of making sure we're disciplined and assignment sound, and we said that [this weekend]," said McCorkle. "Being assignment sound allows them to play fast and play confidently."
A winning culture has developed in Hanover, which the 2025 Big Green hope to continue… and build on. They're hungry for more.
"It's easy to come out on day one, fly around and have juice," said Lemieux. "It's a lot harder on day two, after you've been through it for a day, and even harder on day three. But having the discipline to stay at that same level every single day is going to be important for us."
