GLOUCESTER, Mass.—The American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) announced its major award winners for 2026 on Monday. Dartmouth Associate Head Coach Jason Tapp has been named the honoree of the Terry Flanagan Award.
The Terry Flanagan Award is named in honor of the former New Hampshire and Bowling Green assistant, Terry Flanagan and honors an assistant coach's career body of work.
Tapp joined the Big Green in 2020 as the associate head coach after spending 11 seasons with Union. Since joining the Big Green staff, he has seen four Dartmouth players sign NHL contracts including netminders Clay Stevenson '24 and Cooper Black '26. Tapp also coached multiple future NHL players at Union including Keith Kinkaid, Nick Desimone, Dan Carr, Mike Vecchione, Spencer Foo, Troy Grosenick, and Shayne Gostisbehere. At Union, he coached five All-American on either defense or in goal.
"I want to congratulate Jason on being awarded the Terry Flanagan Award. Jason is one of the top coaches in college hockey. Over the course of his career, he has consistently developed players to reach their full potential and been a part of championship teams." Koenig Family Head Coach of Dartmouth Men's Hockey, Reid Cashman said.
"I am grateful Jason has chosen to be at Dartmouth the last six years. He makes our program better every day."
The native of British Columbia has been a member of multiple Coaching Staff of the Year honors. As a member of the Union staff, the staff won the Tim Taylor ECAC Coaching Staff of the Year in 2011-12 and 2016-17 while being a member of the Spencer Penrose National Coach of the Year winner in 2014. In 2023-24 with Dartmouth, he was a member of the Tim Taylor ECAC Coaching Staff of the Year and in 2024-25 he was a member of the Ivy League Coach of the Year in 2024-25.
At Union, he helped the Dutchmen (now Garnet Chargers) to the 2014 Division I National Championship while earning ECAC Hockey Championships in 2012, 2013, and 2014.
With Dartmouth, the Big Green have seen tremendous growth with Tapp behind the bench. After combining for 12 wins from 2021-23, the Big Green then won 13 games in 2023-24 and broke through with 18 wins and an Ivy League Championship. Dartmouth has made the ECAC Semifinals the last two season and are currently 13-4-0 and are seventh in the NPI rankings and have been in the national polls for nine straight weeks.
Tapp is the fourth Dartmouth coach or former coach to win the award since it was established in 1997. He joins Grant Standbrook (2005), Dave Peters (2008), and Mike Cavanaugh (2013).
The Big Green return to Thompson Arena on Friday, Jan. 17 at 7 PM as Clarkson travels to Hanover. Dartmouth then closes out the season series with St. Lawrence on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 7 PM.
