HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth women's hockey welcomed #7/#6 Princeton to Thompson Arena this weekend, after facing the Tigers in New Jersey just three weeks ago.
Princeton jumped out to an early lead and never surrendered it, going on to defeat Dartmouth, 5-0. With the loss, the Big Green fall to 4-20-3 overall and 2-14-3 in ECAC Hockey play.
Princeton got on the scoreboard just 1:47 into the opening period, taking the 1-0 lead. Despite giving up an early goal, the Big Green settled into the remainder of the period, keeping it a one goal game.
"I thought we battled back and I thought it was a good back and forth period," Head Coach
Maura Crowell said about her team's first 20 minutes of play. "We had some looks, they had some looks, but we settled in. We played really physically in our d-zone, which was great."
The Big Green went on to keep the Tigers off the scoreboard for nearly the next 40 minutes. With just 2:42 to play in the middle frame, Princeton doubled its lead. 30 seconds later, the Tigers found the back of the net again to make it a 3-0 game headed into the final period.
Princeton added two more goals in the final frame, earning the 5-0 victory over the Big Green.
Jiahui Zhan made a total of 36 saves in net, posting double digits in all three periods; 10 in the first, 12 in the second, and 14 in the third.
Despite seeing five goals against on the board, Crowell was impressed with her defense.
"We blocked 17 shots tonight, so I think our team was committed to doing what they needed to do defensively. I think the first goal was really the only goal that came off of d-zone structure, so that's awesome. Certainly something we've been focusing on and got better at since the last game," Crowell said.
While the Big Green still struggled to find the back of the net offensively, Crowell said her team is making strides.
"I thought we got good looks… In terms of quality looks at the goaltender, we're getting in there," Crowell said. "We need to score goals. We've been talking about that for weeks. I do think we're taking steps in the right direction to making it harder on our opponents in our o-zone."
Dartmouth will wrap regular season play at its home rink Saturday, February 7, welcoming the #8/#6 Quinnipiac Bobcats to Thompson Arena. It will also be Senior Day in Hanover as the program will recognize its six seniors.
Puck drop against the Bobcats is set for 3 p.m. You can purchase tickets here, watch the game on ESPN+, or follow the live stats on DartmouthSports.com.
