Volleyball Tops Boston College in First Power Four Win Since 2015

HANOVER, N.H. –The Dartmouth volleyball team earned its first win over a Power Four opponent since 2015 and its first win over Boston College since 1998 Sunday afternoon in Leede Arena as they powered over the Eagles 3-1 (25-20, 25-14, 17-25, 25-20). The Big Green improve to 5-4 on the season, while the Eagles fall to 9-2.

Maddie LaFata turned in the signature performance of the match, finishing with a double-double of 14 kills, 14 digs and four total blocks for 16.5 points. Riley Imamura matched her with 14 kills of her own and a team-high 10 digs for 16.5 points, and Zori Brown added 10 kills and a team-high 14 digs for 12.5 points. Clementine Tebbe was Dartmouth's most efficient hitter, going 7-for-9 with no errors (.778) and leading the team with seven total blocks for 11.0 points. Sophia Gagnepain ran the offense with 23 assists, Julia York added 20 assists and a block, and Sloan Balsley chipped in four service aces and nine digs.

Dartmouth out-hit Boston College .254 to .139 for the match and turned in the more disciplined performance at the service line, and the Big Green defense held the Eagles' high-powered attack, one that came in on a 9-1 run, well below its season averages for most of the afternoon.

Dartmouth set the tone immediately in the first set. LaFata opened the match with a kill, and Balsley served three straight aces during an early run that pushed the Big Green out to a 6-2 cushion. Boston College clawed back to tie it at 20, but Dartmouth closed on a 5-1 run, capped by a Gagnepain ace, to take the first set 25-20.

The Big Green were even better in the second, riding big swings from Tebbe and LaFata to build a comfortable cushion throughout. Dartmouth stretched the lead into double digits in the closing points and closed out the set, 25-14, it's most lopsided of the match, to take a 2-0 lead.

Boston College finally found its footing in the third, jumping out to a 10-4 lead behind Audrey Ross and Naomi Watson and never letting Dartmouth fully come back. The Eagles cruised to a 25-17 win to cut the deficit to 2-1 and force a fourth set.

The Big Green answered right back in the fourth to close out the historic win. Boston College built an early lead, but the Big Green stayed within striking distance behind Imamura, who scored repeatedly in the run of play, and pulled level at 12-12. From there Dartmouth traded points with the Eagles into the high teens before pulling away for good. Brown scored three of four Dartmouth points during a decisive stretch that turned a 16-18 deficit into a 16-23 lead and the Big Green closed out the match, 25-20, to complete the win.

Up Next Dartmouth closes out non-conference play Wednesday, Sept. 23, at 6:00 p.m. when the Big Green hosts New Hampshire at Leede Arena.
