Mathis is a fifth-year senior who is anxious to put injury concerns behind him … an aggressive and physical post presence when healthy … helps provide needed depth in the frontcourt … second straight year serving as a co-captain.
SENIOR (2008-09)
After months of rehab, finally returned to the court in mid-February at Columbia, grabbing a pair of rebounds in five minutes of action … scored his first point of the season at the line against Cornell … ended the season with a three-point play and five rebounds in just four minutes at Brown.
JUNIOR (2007-08)
Knee injuries once again derailed his season … missed the first seven games before getting on the floor against UC Davis … managed 10 minutes, scoring two points, grabbing two boards and committing three fouls.
SOPHOMORE (2006-07)
Enjoyed a terrific start before season was curtailed after just five games due to a knee injury … had surgery over the summer after the season … came off the bench in opening two games before starting his final three … of his 23 rebounds, 17 were off the offensive glass … played career-high 30 minutes against Siena and 28 against Kansas against whom he grabbed four offensive rebounds … battled foul trouble drawing four whistles in four of his five games.
FRESHMAN (2005-06)
Appeared in four games as a rookie … had two rebounds in the loss at Harvard … dished out an assist at Penn … averaged 3.5 minutes in four appearances.
HIGH SCHOOL
Played at New York City’s Kennedy High before doing a postgraduate year at The Berkshire School in Sheffield, Mass. … served as team captain at Berkshire, averaging 15 points and 12 rebounds … chosen second-team All-New England Class B … served as the student body president at Berkshire.
PERSONAL
Majoring in history … brother J.C. played two years at Virginia before transferring to Michigan, where he was drafted by the Sioux Falls Skyforce of the NBDL last November … awarded the Berkshire Cup as the outstanding senior at The Berkshire School … received a Dean of the Faculty research grant in the spring of 2007 and developed a presentation emphasizing black pride and black history that he used in surveys during three-day visits with middle and high school students in Brooklyn, N.Y., and Los Angeles.
