Andy Smith begins his tenth season on the Dartmouth staff and sixth as Associate Head Coach.
With coaching experience at the senior international level, Smith was the only U.S.-based coach to be invited to the Federation of International Hockey High Performance coaching course in November of 2002 in Australia.
Smith was also named to the coaching staff of the U.S. U-20 women’s national team in April 2003 and served as a drag flick coach for the U.S. women’s national team. This year he was named an assistant coach for the 2008 New England High Performance Training Squad.
Prior to his arrival at Dartmouth, Smith rapidly ascended the coaching ladder in England. He started out as a colts coach at Doncaster, England, and quickly won titles at the U-9, 12, 14, 16 and 18 levels with the Beeston Hockey Club. In 2002, Smith became the first coach ever to lead U-18 and U-16 teams to state titles in the same season.
Smith is a member of the U.S. Olympic Development Program and served as the coaching director of the Olympic Development camps for U.S. Field Hockey in June 2003 and 2004.
As a player, Smith’s travels have carried him across the globe. He had two stints with the national English Hockey Association mixed team as well as representative honors at U-18, U-21 and full state/county levels. He has played at the top level in England, Australia and Austria.
A native of Doncaster, England, Smith holds the highest coaching diploma in his native country and is one of a handful of U.S.-based coaches to hold a High Performance Coaching Certificate from the FIH.
Smith also directs an indoor field hockey program in Woodstock, Vt. He currently resides in Eastman, N.H. with his wife, Jess and daughter Ellie.
