HANOVER, N.H.—The Dartmouth field hockey team took on No. 14 UMass on Sunday afternoon at Chase Field. Despite having a 2-0 lead in the first quarter, the Big Green fell 3-2.
Just 3:39 in the game, Riley Dumigan intercepted a pass and drove the ball into the circle for the Big Green. Dumigan fought for body position in the circle and fed a backdoor pass to Amelie Luessmann who tapped in her second goal of the year. Dumigan picked up her first point of the season.
Just over six minutes later, the Big Green made it a 2-0 game. Georgia Thornton handled the insertion for a corner and Ella Bowman fired a shot toward the cage. Luessmann redirected the ball into the back of the cage for her second goal of the game. Bowman picked up her seventh point of the season while Thornton notched her first career point.
UMass scored with less than a minute left in the first quarter to cut the Dartmouth lead in half.
Shots were 2-1 in favor of Dartmouth in the first quarter while Dartmouth had the lone corner in the quarter.
Neither team scored in the second quarter as Dartmouth went to halftime with a 2-1 lead.
UMass had a pair of shots in the second quarter, but Ava Carlson turned away the lone shot on goal.
The Big Green held on to the lead in the third quarter as UMass had a pair of shots in the third quarter, but Kylie McKinley made a save on the lone shot on goal. Penalty corners were tied at two in the third quarter. Just ahead of the midway mark of the third quarter, Ruby Walsh tallied a defensive save to keep UMass off the board.
The Minutewomen scored a pair of goals with less than 10 minutes remaining to take a 3-2 lead. Dartmouth looked to respond but could not crack the UMass backline.
Through three games, Dartmouth is 2-1 while Bowman has seven points, as a sophomore she had eight points in 16 games. Luessmann has already set a new career high with six points in three games.
The Big Green hit the road for four games starting on Friday, Sept. 19 at Harvard at 4 PM. Dartmouth then travels to New Hampshire, Penn, and Lafayette to close out the four game road trip.
