Mitchell Thompson enters his first season at Dartmouth in 2025 after being hired in April. Thompson, who will coach the wide receivers, comes to Dartmouth from Bates College in Maine where he served as offensive coordinator.
Â
"I am extremely excited to join the Dartmouth football program, and I'd like to thank Coach McCorkle, Coach Montgomery and the entire staff for giving me the opportunity to join the Dartmouth family," said Thompson. "Dartmouth College is a special place with incredible tradition, and I look forward to doing everything I can to help our student-athletes continue to achieve success, both on and off the field."
Â
In his time at Bates, Thompson was responsible for coaching the quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers, along with his role as offensive coordinator. While there, he led an offense that posted the top two ranked scoring offenses in in the last 15 years in program history. The Bobcats defeated No. 1 ranked Wesleyan and No. 2 Middlebury with a starting offense that included eight first-years and sophomores. The Bobcats led the NESCAC in rushing yards per game in 2024, and were ranked first in third-down conversion percentage in both 2022 and 2024. Bates' offense was tops in the country in red zone touchdown percentage in 2024.
Â
"We've known Mitchell since he was a high school player attending on of our camps and have enjoyed watching his coaching career develop," said McCorkle. "We're excited to welcome him and his family to our program. Mitchell's energy and work ethic will be a great fit with our staff and players."
Â
Thompson was also recruiting coordinator at Bates from 2022-23, and strength and conditioning football coordinator from 2022-25. He designed and implemented a new offseason training program promoting competition and academic excellence, and was responsible for designing and leading team lifts and training sessions.
Â
Prior to Bates, Thompson served as wide receivers coach at Amherst College where he coached five All-Conference players from 2017-21; no other program had more All-Conference wide receivers during that time. Thompson was also social media coordinator and recruiting assistant, while also serving as special teams assistant.
Â
Other coaching experience includes time at Oberlin College in Ohio during the 2016 season. He was hired as the defensive backs coach, then given coordinator duties during the season. Prior to that, he had had his first stint at Amherst as outside linebackers coach and video coordinator.
Â
As a student-athlete, Thompson was a two-time ODAC All-Conference defensive back at Washington & Lee in Virginia. He was a four-year letterwinner and served as team captain. A two-time ODAC Conference Champion (2010 and 2012), Thompson was named to the All-Academic Team and was a 2013 USA Football DIII All-American. He also won two state championships in high school (2008 and 2009) at Memphis University School.
