Heyliger finished his first season as the graduate assistant coach on the Dartmouth staff in 2018-19. The native of Queens, New York, performed a myriad of tasks, including helping with player development, game preparation and scouting, breaking down video on opponents potential recruits and assisting with logistical issues.
“In less than a year, Josh has had a significant impact within our program,” head coach David McLaughlin said. “He is an extremely talented young coach who brings selfless energy each day. Josh is a relationship builder, a passionate communicator, and his intrinsic motivation allows him to work at his craft consistently. I am excited to see what the future holds for Josh.”
Prior to his arrival in Hanover, Heyliger served as a varsity boys’ basketball assistant coach and assistant athletics director in 2017-18 at The Hill School, the prep institution from which he graudated. He also was the junior varsity boys’ basketball head coach the year before while also serving as a communications intern and admissions intern. He was responsible for updating the website and published stories on alumni for the school magazine, plus conferred with numerous prospective students and their parents about the admissions process.
Heyliger was recruited by McLaughlin to play at Stonehill College, where he helped the Skyhawks post a 62-52 record while scoring 469 points before graduating in 2016 with a degree in communication. In the summer after graduation, he was a coach and camp counselor at the Alexander Basketball Academy in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. The following summer, he served as a basketball coach at Hoop Group, held at Albright College.
Heyliger is currently working toward his master’s degree at Dartmouth in liberal studies with an expected graduation in May of 2020.
