Head squash and tennis professional at the Royal Canadian Yacht Club in Toronto, Ontario since 1993, John Power was appointed head coach of men's and women's squash at Dartmouth in July, 1998. Since then, he has coached the men's team to a seven-year mark of 79-39 while guiding the women's team to a 64-28 record. A provincial and national age-group champion himself, Power coached the Ontario squash team to the gold medal in the 1991 Canada Games. In 1998, Power had 10 junior players who were ranked either provincially or nationally in Canada.
Power graduated from St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia in 1971 with a bachelor's degree in physical education. He was a physical education and recreation officer for the Canadian Armed Forces for 20 years, from 1973-93, before taking his position at the Royal Canadian Yacht Club. Power is a Level 3 coach in the Canadian coaching certification program and is a registered fitness appraiser. He has worked throughout the Canadian provinces and is bilingual in French and English.
As a collegiate student, Power won varsity letters in football, basketball, rugby and tennis. Champion of the Canadian Forces numerous times in tennis and squash, he has coaching experience in football and basketball as well. His three children have won numerous national and international squash titles, and his oldest son, Jonathan, retired in March 2006 ranked No. 1 in the world.
