Q & A with Matthew Marcus
Why Dartmouth?
I love the beautiful New England setting that Dartmouth is situated in. Walking around the campus when visiting, I really felt at home here. I also knew that Dartmouth has great academic programs and liked the flexibility and opportunities provided by the D-Plan.
How long have I been rowing and what sparked my interest?
My story with rowing is a bit unique. I first rowed in the summer before my freshman year of high school. I really liked the activity, so I pursued it throughout freshman year. At the end of the year, however, a variety of factors compelled me to stop rowing. That being said, I never disliked rowing, I just had other things on my plate. By the end of high school, I had an idea in my head that I might like to rejoin rowing in college. When I visited for Dimensions, my host, Rob Meyer ’15, was on the team and told me it was a lot of fun. So when I came to Dartmouth and saw the poster for the informational meeting, I decided to give it a shot. Once I started rowing on the Connecticut River and hanging out with the team, I knew that I had made the right choice in joining Dartmouth Crew.
Have I won any awards?
I haven’t won any rowing awards yet. In high school though, I received the senior awards for mathematics and leadership, and was a National AP Scholar and National Merit Finalist. I also competed in policy debate, and won the Florida State Championship tournament and was a two-time qualifier to the national Tournament of Champions.
Something interesting about yourself?
When I was in lower school, I almost electrocuted myself when trying to test the boundaries on an RC Helicopter fan. I disassembled the helicopter, took out the wires that previously linked the fan to a battery, and plugged the wires into a power outlet. After going unreasonably fast for a few seconds, the fan exploded and an electric shock came out from the outlet. Needless to say, I made it past that event, but I still think it was pretty cool.
