Sydney Benz was promoted to first assistant coach during the summer of 2022 following her first season with the Big Green. She leads Dartmouth's hitting efforts and assists with defensive coaching.Â
During the 2025 season, with Head Coach Jen Williams at the helm, Benz helped coach four athletes to All-Ivy recognition. Alaana Panu was named unanimous First Team, Jenna Brown was named Second Team and Academic All-Ivy while Jensin Hall and Faby Serna were named Honorable Mentions. Panu also added an NFCA Third Team All-Region honor at the conclusion of the season. Defensively, Benz coached the Big Green to the least amount of errors in the entire Ivy League.Â
Last season, Benz served as Dartmouth's defense coach and led the No. 1 defensive unit in the Ivy League. She helped mentor Ivy League Player of the Year Billie McFadyen and All-Ivy League selection Kate Farren to strong seasons in the infield. Benz helped Dartmouth attain the best fielding percentage in the Ivy League as the program finished the season with a 14-7 record in conference play.
Benz joined the coaching staff in August of 2021 after serving two seasons as a volunteer assistant coach at East Carolina. She had a hand in the day-to-day operations of the Pirates program, including practice plans, recruiting, film break down and scouting reports while acting as the first base coach. She also organized and facilitated the team travel plans and meals, plus helped grow the sport in the Greenville area by providing hitting and defensive instruction to local athletes.
“We’re very excited to have Sydney join us,” Coach Williams said. “She’s a great fit for our team and will be an asset to the staff. We look forward to having her work with our infielders and know she will share her experience and growth with all of our players.”
A 2018 graduate from the University of Arkansas with a degree in psychology, Benz furthered her education by obtaining her master’s degree in sport management at Arkansas as well. She began her collegiate career at the University of Louisville, hitting .295 with a pair of homers in 44 at-bats, helping the Cardinals advance to an NCAA Regional. In each of her final three years of eligibility, she helped Arkansas reach the postseason, including a regional victory in 2018. Benz was the softball team’s representative for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, plus was a National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-America Scholar-Athlete in each of the three seasons she played for the Razorbacks.
During the summers while in school, Benz returned home to Carol Stream, Illinois, and served as an assistant coach and private hitting instructor at the White Sox Training Academy. She coached players from ages 8-18 and aided in the recruitment for prospective college softball student-athletes while also scheduling games and practices while arranging travel for the teams.
