Q&A Lauren Vavruska
Why Dartmouth?
I was drawn to Dartmouth for a number of reasons: it offered the intimacy of a small liberal arts college, but with the breadth of academic offerings and intellectual rigor of a larger university. The people at Dartmouth are equally complex: smart, but laid-back; academically driven, but collaborative. I honestly cannot imagine being at any other place!
How long have you been rowing and what interested you about rowing?
I had been a competitive swimmer since I was five, and joined the rowing team in the spring of my junior year of high school to add some cross-training in the swimming off season. I soon found that I enjoyed being on top of the water more than in it. Unlike swimming, rowing is a true team sport, and I liked working hard as part of a collective whole.
What is something about you that might come as a surprise to your teammates?
I am pretty sure that no one at Dartmouth knows (until now) that I played the alto saxophone for nine years.
What extracurricular activities are you involved in on campus?
In addition to rowing, I am also a member of the Alpha Phi sorority.
What are your future plans, if any?
I plan to study economics and art history while here at Dartmouth and enjoy all that Hanover has to offer before they kick me out into the real world!
