Hansi Wiens has served as the head coach of the Big Green squash teams for 12 years. Prior to becoming head coach, he served as an assistant to Coach John Power.
During his tenure, Wiens has guided his team to some historic victories and overseen the play of five All-American athletes (four men and one woman) for a total of 11 seasons, including Chris Hanson ’13 who earned the honor all four years for the Big Green. Wiens enters the 2021-22 season with an overall record of 104-86 at the helm of the men and 83-94 with the women.
The 2015-16 season turned out to be a historic one for the men as they defeated both Harvard and Princeton, Dartmouth’s first victories over either school since before the Ivy League was formed in 1956-57. The Big Green went on to record four Ivy victories for just the second time ever, a feat they would repeat two years later. That 2017-18 squad also tied a program record with 13 dual-match triumphs and placed fifth at the Potter Cup, one year after winning the Hoehn Cup for the first time in 16 years.
The women have competed in the Howe Cup three times with Wiens guiding the program (2011, ’12, ’14) and reached the Kurtz Cup in each of his other eight campaigns, winning the tournament four times (2010, ’13, ’16, ’17). The Big Green have been consistently competitive under his tutelage, posting eight or nine dual-match victories seven times.
Wiens came to Dartmouth after managing the Balearic Islands (Spain) club team for three years.
Prior to coaching in Spain he was the owner/manager and coach of the March Sports Club in his native Germany from 1996 until 2003.
As a player, Wiens was a full-time professional player for eight years. During that span he was ranked as high as eighth in the world. A nine-time German Close champion, he represented his country in team competition 46 times.
Wiens studied engineering in Germany doing a three-year apprenticeship. He speaks four languages, German, English, Spanish and Russian.
Wiens lives in Hanover, N.H., with wife Valeria, daughter Scarlett and son Lorenz.
