Maribel Sanchez Souther is entering her sixth year as Head Cross Country/Assistant Track and Field Coach. Responsible for cross country and the middle distance/distance events on the track, Souther looks to build the young distance corps to a level that is competitive within the Ivy League and contribute to the team’s traditional dominance. During her short time as head coach, Souther has developed the talent within the program while recruiting outstanding freshmen classes. Academically, the women’s cross country team has been named NCAA D-1 All-Academic Team for the past five years.
In the fall of 2002, she joined the Dartmouth track and field staff as an intern, helping the Big Green women's cross country team to a third place finish at the NCAA qualifier. In her first year as head women’s cross country coach, her team had it’s highest finish at the Ivy League championships since 1998. In addition, Melanie Schorr ('06) earned her first appearance at the Cross Country NCAA’s. In 2005, Schorr earned her second trip and achieved All-American status grabbing 22nd place. Since returning to her alma mateur, Souther has coached one All-American, seven All-Ivy, five All-Region, and six All-New England runners.
Souther graduated from Dartmouth in 1996 with a degree in sociology and a special concentration in education. She enjoyed a tremendous career at Dartmouth and was a four-time All-America. She was a two-time Heptagonal Cross Country champion, a two-time Indoor & three-time outdoor Heptagonal champion. She won the USA Junior Nationals in cross country in 1994, captained the cross country teams in 1995 and 1996, and was honored as Dartmouth's outstanding female athlete in 1996. She led the cross country squad to a fifth-place finish at the NCAA championships in 1996. She also holds the school record in the 3000m.
She continued her running career after Dartmouth and has competed for both Team New Balance and Reebok Boston. In her post collegiate running stint, she achieved PR’s of 15:50 for 5K, 9:11 for 3k, and 33:50 for 10K. She qualified for the 2000 US Olympic Trials in the 5,000. Before returning to Dartmouth, Souther went back to school to obtain a national certification and license to practice massage therapy. While running competitively, she was the massage therapist for many elite and professional athletes in the Boston area.
She lives in Hanover, N.H. with her husband, John and their son, Jackson. She is currently working towards a master’s degree in sports management.
