Throughout the summer, DartmouthSports.com will be focusing on members of the Class of 2020 who are currently in their "Sophomore Summers."
This installment features Matthew Ix of the lightweight rowing team.
DartmouthSports: What have you been doing during your sophomore summer?
Matthew Ix: Sophomore Summer was packed. I did a 30-mile backpacking trip of the Pemigewasset Loop with my friends, took a trip to Montreal, and had an awesome time showing my parents around during Parent's Weekend.
DS: What is your favorite place on campus?
MI: The bow pair of the Empacher 8+ with
Henry Cawthorne in 5 seat for a long distance row on the Connecticut.
DS: If you could swap places with one teammate, who would it be and why?
MI: My teammate Wyatt Smith just spent the summer fighting fires out West. He grew some sweet hair and I'm sure saw some amazing landscapes (I assume when they weren't actively on fire). I'm jealous of both those things.
DS: If you could play another sport at Dartmouth, what would it be and why?
MI: I wish I could say another non-racing sport. Some sport where there's a referee and you get a chance to adjust your game plan after the clock starts and months of training doesn't come down to 6 minutes or less. But I have to say Alpine Skiing. I grew up ski racing on a hill in Northern Pennsylvania and gave that up (I wasn't good) to start rowing in high school. Half of the sport you get to hang out with your friends on the chairlift and look at the mountains!
DS: Outside of sports, what are you most passionate about?
MI: I think everyone should agree soon that automatic weapons are not necessary for self-protection or hunting.
DS: Other than your parents, who has had the greatest influence on your life?
MI: My group of friends and coaches at St. Joseph's Prep Rowing. My ten friends and I had the best time rowing together and hanging out on the weekends. Our group chat still lights up at least every other day. And my junior year coach Sean Clarke taught me how to be an athlete.
DS: Who would play you in the movie of your life?
MI: Matt Damon. My freshman year, I got the flu in the Fall, Winter, AND Spring and each time the nurse at Dick's House said "You look a lot like Matt Damon!" I'm not sure that's very true, but I'll go with it. Anyway, sometimes as I'm walking through the Math building, I see a math problem written on the chalk board and I just solve it.
DS: What has been your best on-field memory thus far in your Dartmouth career?
MI: Our first 2,000-meter erg test during Winter 2018 is my best memory so far. Our rookie assistant,
Trevor Michelson, turned the boys into absolute erg dogs from November to February and when we finally tested our racing distance it paid off. Many others and I broke our personal records by substantial amounts. It felt amazing to finish that piece, celebrate for myself and all my teammates, and be a part of a massive culture and training shift for the D150s. I don't know how many rowers' best memories are in the erg room.
DS: What's the app you use most on your phone?
MI: I recently consolidated every app I have into one giant folder and disabled all notifications except from email, calls, and texts. I hate the little red notification "1"s that constantly distract me. As a result, I mostly just use Spotify for listening to music while I walk to class or work out.
DS: What show do you binge watch?
MI: I don't have time to watch T.V./Netflix but I have previously binge-watched "The Office". Now, instead of the show, I binge watch "The Office" bloopers on YouTube.
DS: What is your useless/hidden talent?
MI: No one eats more Clif Bars than me. I eat one before every practice and we practice 8-10 times a week, every term. They seem to provide the perfect amount of energy, sit in my stomach right during hard workouts, and somehow haven't started to taste gross. I'm honestly freaked out how I'm not sick of them yet. I think at this point I should get sponsored. If anyone reading this knows someone, please get into contact with me and the Dartmouth Athletics compliance officer.
