As an undergraduate, Stan Smoyer was a solid varsity swimmer for Coach Sid Hazelton.
He left superlative performances to his sons. As a Dartmouth parent, Stan watched Dave ’63 earn nine letters. Dave was twice named the All-Ivy goalie in soccer. He also was an outstanding squash and tennis player. Stan shared Dave’s limelight once when the three-sport performer was already into his senior squash season, traveling to New York ot accept his son’s All-America award in soccer.
During the next four years, another son, Bill ’67, had an outstanding career. He was an All-Ivy bak in soccer as a senior and also earned All-Ivy mention in hockey for the Green.
Stan Smoyer’s professional career was the law. For 30 years, he was a fixture in the law department of Johnson & Johnson, one of the nation’s largest manufacturers of surgical dressings, baby products and pharmaceuticals. He served as assistant general counsel and was an officer of J&J for many years until he retired in 1975.
Smoyer has served Dartmouth with distinction for decades in a range of positions involving enrollment, class activities, the Alumni Council (of which he was president), capital campaigns and trustee committees.
His generosity on behalf of athletics is equally outstanding. Since Thompson Arena opened in 1975, the “most used” room in the arena — short of the locker rooms — has been Smoyer Lounge, a gift from the Smoyer family that honors Bill, who was killed in Vietnam shortly after he graduated.
Another leadership gift by Stan Smoyer benefitted Dartmouth’s tennis facility, perpetuating the Smoyer family’s commitment to excellence in athletics at Dartmouth.
