Dartmouth Men's Hockey Rolls Past No. 3 Cornell
Nov. 12, 2005
HANOVER, N.H. - After struggling out of the gate this season, the Dartmouth men's hockey team put it all together tonight, cruising past third-ranked Cornell, 6-1. Sophomore
Nick Johnson scored a pair of goals, and freshman
Ryan Bellows scored the gamewinner with his first collegiate goal.
Dartmouth (1-4-0, 1-4-0 ECACHL) opened the scoring at 9:49 of the first when junior
Tanner Glass (Craven, Sask.) scored his second of the season on a power play, with the assists going to seniors Eric Przepiorka (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) and Garret Overlock (Greenwich, Conn.). The Big Red tied it at 14:22 with a power play tally of its own, this one by Byron Bitz. After that it was all Big Green, much to the delight of the 4215 in attendance at Thompson Arena.
Bellows (St. Catharines, Ont.) scored at 15:57 to give Dartmouth the lead for good with fellow freshman
Kevin Swallow (Stanwood, Mich.) getting the assist for his first collegiate point. Dartmouth would end the period with a 3-1 lead after junior
Dan Shribman (Swampscott, Mass.) scored his first of the season on a delayed penalty situation at 18:35.
The Big Green continued to dominate the play in the second, adding three more goals in the frame. At 1:25, Johnson (Calgary, Alta.) scored his first of the night while Dartmouth was on the power play. Przepiorka scored Dartmouth's third power play tally at 4:09 of the second, giving him three points (1g, 2a) for the night. The goal also chased Cornell netminder David McKee for the first time in his career.
Johnson would tack on Dartmouth's sixth goal while the Big Green was shorthanded. Senior captain Mike Ouellette (Kamloops, B.C.) picked up a loose puck behind the Cornell net and brought it out front where Johnson was able to stuff it home.
The Big Green's six goals were the most allowed by Cornell (4-2-0, 3-1-0 ECACHL) since January 2001. Dartmouth went 3-for-11 on the power play while the Big Red went 1-for-9. Sophomore
Mike Devine (Orchard Park, N.Y.) stopped 19 shots to earn the victory.
Dartmouth returns to action on Friday, November 18 when it faces Brown at Thompson Arena. Gametime is set for 7 p.m.
