Dartmouth Men's Hockey Scores in Overtime for a 4-3 Win over Bemidji State

BURLINGTON, Vt. - Despite allowing two third period goals by Bemidji State (9-7-2) the Dartmouth (6-8) men's hockey team came from behind, scoring in overtime to defeat the Beavers, 4-3 in the consolation game of the Sheraton/TD Banknorth Catamount Cup at the University of Vermont. Sophomore
Nick Johnson (Calgary, Alta.) was the Big Green's hero, scoring early in the extra stanza for the win. Johnson was named the player of the game for Dartmouth.
The Big Green struck first with a goal by
David Jones (North Vancouver, B.C.) at 14:01.
Ben Lovejoy (Orford, N.H.) stole the puck at center ice dumping it down in front of the Bemidji nets. Jones streaking from the bench picked up the deflection and fired, putting the Big Green up, 1-0.
The Beavers scored the equalizer with 6:04 remaining in the stanza. Dartmouth defender Garret Overlock (Greenwich, Conn.) attempted to steal the puck at the blue line but was knocked down as Rile Weselowski poked it forward to Tyler Scofield who went one-on-one with Big Green netminder
Mike Devine, beating Devine high on the glove side. Dartmouth pulled ahead early in the second period. Just :24 into the stanza Mike Ouellette (Kamloops, B.C.) potted a short handed 4-on-3 strike to put the Big Green ahead, 2-1.
The Beavers tied things up at 12:01 in the final period of play. A 5-on-3 opportunity for Bemidji allowed Rob Sirianni to shoot through Devine's leg for the equalizer. Scofield picked up an assist. It was the first power play goal given up by the Big Green in three games. The Beavers went ahead on another power play as Andrew Martens passed to a waiting Sirianni in the corner who shot it in behind Devine who had been pulled out of the net.
Dartmouth tied it with less than two minutes to go on its first power play goal of the weekend. Eric Przepiorka (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) passed up to Overlock who fired it in from the blue line. Johnson's heroic game winner came just 3:37 into overtime as Przepiorka and Jarrett Sampson (Prince Albert, Sask.) set up Johnson for the game winner.
Dartmouth finished the game with 39 shots on goal while Bemidji recorded 36. Devine (5-4) was chosen All-Tournament and finished with 33 saves while Layne Sedevie (6-2-1) had 35.
The Big Green will be back in action on Jan. 6 and 7, traveling to Albany to take on ECACHL foes, RPI and Union.
