Dartmouth Men's Hockey Breaks Out in Third for Win Over Rensselaer
Jan. 6, 2006
TROY, N.Y. - The Dartmouth (7-8, 6-5 ECACHL) men's hockey team scored three goals in the third period to break a 1-1 tie with Rensselaer (8-9-3, 2-2-3 ECACHL) picking up two points in a heated league race.
Dartmouth lit the lamp first at 19:41 in the first stanza. With just 10 seconds elapsed on a Rensselaer penalty,
J.T. Wyman (Wayzata, Minn.) gave the Big Green a 1-0 lead. Mike Ouellette (Kamloops, B.C.) won the faceoff passing behind to Sean Offers (St. Albert, Alta.) waiting on the blue line. Offers fired on net with Wyman there for the tip-in.
RPI tied it up at 10:45 on a 5-on-3. As Offers and
Grant Lewis were in the penalty box Andrew Lord capitalized on the opportunity, notching the second power play strike of the contest.
The two teams remained scoreless through the second stanza. Dartmouth outshot the Engineers, 13-8. RPI had a slight advantage as the Big Green was whistled for three penalties but the home team couldn't break the tie.
Two goals three minutes apart midway through the final period allowed Dartmouth to pull ahead. At 12:09 Ouellette played the puck behind the net skating around to the front passing up to a waiting
David Jones (North Vancouver, B.C.) who roofed the puck over RPI netminder Mathias Lange.
Ben Lovejoy (Orford, N.H.) also assisted.
The Big Green got another one at 9:19 as its third line accounted for the goal to put Dartmouth ahead, 3-1. Jarrett Sampson (Prince Albert, Sask.) and
Rob Pritchard (Burnaby, B.C.) worked the puck back and forth before
Dan Shribman (Swampscott, Mass.) got a stick down to poke it in.
Lovejoy added an insurance goal at 5:09. Eric Przepiorka (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) and
Nick Johnson (Calgary, Alta.) both had shots on net with Lovejoy waiting for a rebound at the blue line. The defenseman skated in and with Lange out of the net he fired a shot that skimmed the upper net to put the Big Green ahead, 4-1.
Dartmouth netminder
Mike Devine (Orchard Park, N.Y.) continues to be stellar for the Big Green. He tied his career-high with 33 saves enroute to his sixth win of the year. Lange had 27 saves for the Engineers and is 7-7-3.
Dartmouth is back in action tomorrow night in a 7:00 pm league contest at Union.
