As the Olympic Winter Games in Torino, Italy, approach, Dartmouth is again
represented on the United States Olympic Team. Two skiers were named Jan. 3
to the US Biathlon team, based on results at the TD Banknorth Festival at
Ft. Kent, the qualifying event for the US Olympic Team in Ft. Kent, ME.
Carolyn Treacy, a Dartmouth senior from Duluth, MN, posted three top-10
finishes, including second place result in the 7.5-kilometer sprint race on
Dec. 30, to earn a berth on the US team. Sarah Konrad, a 1989 Dartmouth
graduate from Laramie, WY, won the 10-kilometer pursuit race on Jan. 2 and
posted two other top-10 finishes to also qualify for the trip to Torino in
February.
Ten Olympic medal events in biathlon, which combines the physically
demanding sport of cross-country skiing with the intense precision of rifle
marksmanship, will be held February 11-25.
In addition to Treacy and Konrad, five women's ice hockey players with
connections to Dartmouth have been selected for the US and Canadian Olympic
teams. More Dartmouth athletes are expected to be named to represent the US
- as well as other nations - as the Games draw near. Selections for the US
Ski Team, both cross country and Alpine, are expected later this month.
Dartmouth has been represented by athletes and coaches at every Olympic
Winter Games since 1924.
