Hanover, N.H. – The 13th-ranked Dartmouth women's soccer team knocked off in-state rival New Hampshire, 2-0 this afternoon. It was the fifth consecutive win for the Big Green, who extended its unbeaten and shutout streak to nine games. Dartmouth has not allowed a goal since Sept. 15.
'We are definitely excited to get this win," said Head Coach Angie Hind. "UNH is always a tough game because there is a lot of local pride at stake."
Dartmouth earned its local bragging rights in convincing fashion, out-shooting New Hampshire 15-3 and not allowing a single shot on goal. The Big Green pummelled Wildcat goalkeeper Lynn Gugliuzza with 11 shots on goal, but she made nine saves in an impressive outing.
"She [Gugliuzza] made some great saves, she put forth a good effort out there today," said Hind.
Though the Big Green took six shots to the Wildcats' zero in the first half, the home team managed to keep Dartmouth off the scoreboard.
"The first half was close, but I challenged the players at halftime and they really stepped up to it," noted Hind, who earned her 22nd victory in two seasons as Dartmouth's head coach.
The Big Green finally got on the board in the 71st minute with some teamwork by seniors Sarah Johnson (Shorewood, Minn.) and Emily Tracy (Belfair, Wash.). Johnson picked up the ball at midfield and beat several UNH defenders before sending a perfect cross to Tracy, who made a run, blindsided her defender and beat the keeper.
The goal was Tracy's second-straight game-winner.
Up 1-0, it did not take Dartmouth long to extend its lead. Senior captain Megan Wijas (Southborough, Mass.) joined her classmates in the scoring column in the 78th minute with a hard shot from the right side 25 yards out. She placed it perfectly in the upper left corner of the goal.
Dartmouth sophomore goalkeeper Laurel Peak (Reading, Conn.) earned the shutout in her first start of the season. The Big Green's back line was impressive as usual, including a standout performance by senior captain Whitney Douthett (Newtown, Pa.).
Hind noted that the win was a good team effort, with particularly outstanding play by rookie Ali Hubbard (Marshfield, Mass.) and senior Nicole Cameli (Brookfield, Wis.).
The first-place Big Green will put its nine-game unbeaten streak on the line again when it goes toe-to-toe with Columbia, the Ivy's only other unbeaten team at 3-0-1 on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
