ITHACA, N.Y. - The Dartmouth women's volleyball team lost its second match in a row, losing 3-0 to Cornell tonight in Ithaca, N.Y. The Big Green hit .296 and recorded a season-high 16 total blocks but it was not enough. Game scores were 30-26, 30-24, 30-20. Wiith the loss Dartmouth falls to 9-8 overall and 3-4 in the Ivy League while the Big Red improves to 10-8, 5-2 Ivy.
"This is a very disappointing loss for us," said head coach Ann Marie Larese. "We really just made some mental mistakes against the best blocking team in conference and it wasn't enough for us to overcome. Morgan Covington and Whitney Ward came off the bench to play really well for us. But unfortunately it was errors that beat us tonight and Cornell was a good enough team to capitalize on those mistakes."
Dartmouth had 11 service errors in the game as the Big Red answered back with six service aces. The Big Green seemed to be in every game as Dartmouth hit over .200 in every contest but ball handling and reception errors kept the Big Green from every getting a lead or an advantage.
Jess Thomas (Tampa, Fla.) led the Big Green in kills with 12 and Katie Hirsch (Austin, Texas) was tops with 32 assists. Ward (Hilton Head, S.C.) led Dartmouth in hitting with a .600 hitting percentage as the freshman recorded just one error while making seven kills. Frances Samolowicz (St. Charles, Ill.) was the key blocker for Dartmouth with five total blocks while Covington (Katy, Texas) recorded two solo blocks and two assisted.
The Big Green continues on the road, traveling to Columbia for a 4:00 p.m. matchup on Saturday, Oct. 21.
