New York, N.Y. – The Dartmouth women's volleyball team got 20-plus kills from Jess Thomas (Tampa, Fla.) and Sandy Barbut (Los Angeles, Calif.) to defeat Columbia 3-1 in Ivy League volleyball action today in Frances Levien Gym. The win improves Dartmouth's record to 10-8 overall and .500 in the Ivy with a 4-4 record. Columbia falls to 5-12, 0-8 Ivy.
"We had some good hustle tonight with Jess and Sandy just inspiring us," said head coach Ann Marie Larese. "Colmbia was very scrappy and they kept coming at us but we played some good defense making them commit several errors into the net. We had better serving tonight and much better overall play."
Game scores were 30-20, 27-30, 30-23 and 30-25. Dartmouth hit .340 with 24 kills to easily win the first game. The Lions mustered just eight kills in the game. Columbia battled to hit .278 in Game Two and held a 27-25 lead before closing out the game to win. The BIg Green got five kills from Barbut and Thomas to win the third game handidly.
The fourth game had Dartmouth starting on a tear, connecting or capitalizing on Columbia errors for the first six points. The Lions finally got on the board but not before the BIg Green enjoyed a lead of 12-1. Columbia finally got fired up closing the 19-5 gap with a 15-4 run making it 23-20 but Dartmouth closed out the game with a 6-5 run of its own to end the game in a victory.
Thomas had a double-double with 21 kills and 18 digs while Barbut was stellar with 20 kills and nine digs. Katie Hirsch (Austin, Texas) recorded an unbelievable 60 assists along with 18 digs.
Dartmouth will be back in action Oct. 27 and 28 traveling to Penn and Princeton.
