PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - In a match that lasted two and a half hours, Dartmouth dropped a heartbreaker to the University of Pennsylvania, 3-2 Friday evening at The Palestra. Dartmouth started things off winning the first game, 30-23, but the Quakers bounced back winning Game 2, 30-28. Dartmouth took Game 3 by the same score, but lost Game 4, 31-29 and Game 5, 15-9.
Four Big Green players recorded double-digit digs as Dartmouth registered 112 digs. The Big Green also had 13 service aces in the match.
After winning the first game rather easily, Penn took a seven-point lead in Game 2 and did not let the Big Green get close until late.
Dartmouth came back in the third game as Penn held an early five-point. The Big Green managed to put the game out of reach thanks to three separate runs that made the score 21-11. Trailing 29-23, the Quakers tried their best to mount a comeback. After three Big Green attack errors, a Penn kill and then a service ace made it a two-point game.
Game 4 proved to be the most even-matched game of the night. With 11 tie scores and six lead changes, both teams were knotted up at 28-28. A kill gave Penn a brief advantage until
After falling behind 4-2, the Quakers stormed back with four consecutive points in the final game never relinquishing the lead. Ahead 9-8, Penn went on a 5-0 run that included two service aces.
Jess Thomas (Tampa, Fla.) was tops for the Big Green with 18 kills and 17 digs while Barbut and Megan MacGregor (Carlsbad, Calif.) also had double-doubles. Barbut was second on the team with 13 kills and led with 25 digs while MacGregor recorded 11 kills and 24 digs. Amanda Marston (Austin, Texas) had 23 digs. Katie Hirsch was tops for the Big Green with 46 assists.
Dartmouth will be back in action tomorrow afternoon, traveling to Princeton for 4:00 p.m. match.
