Burlington, Vt. – Two Dartmouth players scored their first collegiate goals in a 2-1 victory at the University of Vermont this afternoon. With the win, the Big Green improves to 6-6-3 (3-1-1 Ivy) while the Catamounts fall to 8-6-4.
Vermont got on the board early, taking a 1-0 lead when Chris Scherbel collected the rebound of Jordan Crasilneck's shot and beat Dartmouth goalkeeper Sean Milligan (Westport, Conn.).
The Big Green managed to even the score before halftime when sophomore Dani Rothenberg (Atlanta, Ga.) forced a turnover by the Catamount defense and fired a shot from the right side, 10 yards out.
The second half started off slowly for both squads, but Dartmouth took control in the last third of the game. The Big Green received a boost from rookie Derek Stenquist (Hudson, Mass.), who made his fourth start of the season. Stenquist connected on a low cross from junior Nick Christman (Falmouth, Mass.) to give his team the 2-1 lead with his first collegiate goal in the 75th minute. Christman sent the ball into the box from the left side and Stenquist finished from five yards out.
"This was a tremendous win for us in terms of keeping the momentum going before a big game (Harvard) on Sunday," said Head Coach Jeff Cook, who picked up his 120th career victory today. "The group of players we had out there today did awfully well, and it's always nice to come from behind and win."
Senior Mark Limpert (Elizabethtown, Pa.) served as captain today, playing a solid game and leading a young Big Green lineup.
The Catamounts outshot the Big Green, 11-4, but Dartmouth was certainly more economical, with three shots on goal and two scores. Milligan finished with two saves in goal while his counterpart, Kyle Tufts, made one.
Dartmouth is back in action on Sunday when it hosts Harvard in a critical Ivy match-up at 1:30 p.m. The team will honor its six seniors prior to the contest.
