HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth women's volleyball team won its biggest game of the 2006 season, stunning the unbeaten Princeton Tigers in three games on Friday night in Leede Arena. The Big Green hit .309 for the game with Nadine Parris (Plymouth, Minn.) leading the way with a .533 percentage. The win is the Big Green's first over the Tigers since Oct. 7, 2000 and just the fourth in school history. The loss drops Princeton to 11-1, 1-1 Ivy while Dartmouth, on a three-game winning streak, improves to 7-6 overall, 1-2 Ivy.
"This is one of the biggest wins we've ever had," said an elated head coach Ann Marie Larese. "I'm so proud of this team."
The entire match was point-for-point with neither team seeming to get much of an advantage. In the first game the two battled with the lead as no more than two. With the game tied at 27 the Big Green's Sandy Barbut (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Frances Samolowicz (St. Charles, Ill.) came up with a huge block to give Dartmouth the lead, enroute to a 30-27 win.
In Game Two, Princeton went up quickly 4-1 before Dartmouth came back to tie and go ahead. Neither side was able to get much of an advantage for the next couple of points. The Tigers regrouped for a slight lead, 19-16 but the Big Green continued to battle, going up by as much as four. Barbut served three straight points to give Dartmouth a 25-22 lead before going on to win 30-27. The Big Green outhit Princeton in the game, .310 to .190.
Dartmouth came out firing in the third and final game. The Big Green took an immediate lead and went up by as much as seven. Katie Hirsch (Austin, Texas) served the Big Green to an 18-11 before a timely Princeton timeout allowed the Tigers to claw its way back in. Princeton tied the game at 22-all and then took a two-point lead. Parker Henritze gave the Tigers seven straight points before the two teams traded the next couple of points. Freshman Amanda Marston (Austin, Texas) came up big for Dartmouth as she served three points to give the Big Green a 30-27 win.
Jess Thomas (Tampa, Fla.) led Dartmouth in kills with 17 while Megan MacGregor (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Samolowicz both recorded double-digit kills with 11 and 10, respectively. Hirsch had a game-high 50 assists with Marston leading the way with 14 digs.
Dartmouth continues Ivy League play with a match against Penn tomorrow at 4:00 pm in Leede Arena.
