HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth women's volleyball team completed its weekend sweep of Ivy foes with a 3-0 victory over the visiting Penn Quakers on Saturday in Leede Arena. On Friday the Big Green knocked off undefeated Princeton in three games recording the first sweep of Princeton and Penn since October of 2000. Jess Thomas (Tampa, Fla.) again led the way for Dartmouth as the Big Green has won four in a row and is now 8-6 overall and 2-2 in the Ivy League. With the loss Penn falls to 6-8 and 1-2 Ivy.
In the first game of the match, both teams were a little off as neither one could get more than a point or two ahead. Dartmouth started to take over with a lead as high as six at 17-11 before Penn rallied and trailed by only two. A timely Dartmouth timeout had the Big Green coming out to win the next four points with Thomas killing the final one to give Dartmouth a 30-25 win.
In Game Two the momentum swung towards the Quakers as Penn went up by four quickly. Dartmouth's Sandy Barbut (Los Angeles, Calif.) served several points in a row to tie the game and then Amanda Marston (Austin, Texas) came on to give Dartmouth a two-point lead. The Big Green continued to increase its lead enroute to a 30-24 victory.
In the final game Katie Hirsch (Austin, Texas) served Dartmouth to a quick 8-3 advantage. But a reenergized Penn squad battled back and stayed even with the Big Green over the next couple of points. After the Quakers served three in a row to pull within two, Dartmouth took a timeout with Barbut winning the next two to give the Big Green a 29-26 lead. Penn was down by just two before Thomas killed the final Quaker serve to give the Big Green a 30-27 win.
Thomas led all players with her second 17-kill game in a row along with 16 digs. HIrsch was tops with 39 assists while Barbut, Megan MacGregor (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Marston had double-digit digs. Thomas also recorded a game-high three service aces while hitting .457 for the match.
The Big Green continues at home next weekend, hosting Brown on Friday at 7:00 pm and then Yale on Saturday for Homecoming at 6:00 pm.
