ITHACA, N.Y. – The Dartmouth men's hockey team survived a very late scare by Cornell to sweep its first ECAC Hockey League weekend of the season. The Big Green dominated the Big Red in a 3-2 victory.
Dartmouth got on the board first with a power play goal at 12:02 in the first stanza. J.T. Wyman (Wayzata, Minn.) brought it behind the net passing to Nick Johnson (Calgary, Alta.) at the right circle who shot out to a waiting Ben Lovejoy (Orford, N.H.) in front of the net between the circles.
The second Big Green goal was another power play early in the second period. Connor Shields (Edmonton, Alta.) sent the puck down to T.J. Galiardi (Calgary, Alta.) waiting at the right side of the cage to chip it in.
Cornell had a chance to get on the board as the Big Red had five shots on goal in the final three minutes of the stanza but Big Green netminder Mike Devine (Orchard Park, N.Y.) was up to task.
Despite the lack of scoring, the second period was not without its highlights. Cornell outshot the Big Green 10 to 9 and had a flurry of shots midway through the stanza with one post and two saves. Cornell had a chance to finally get one back as Mitch Carefoot was awarded a penalty shot with less than :10 to go in the period. Carefoot's shot went high after Devine got a piece of it, allowing Dartmouth to go into the locker room with a two-goal lead.
Dartmouth put its final tally on the board with an empty net strike by Tanner Glass (Craven, Sask.) with 2:22 left in the game. But Cornell was not finished as Tony Romano and Raymond Sawada scored back-to-back goals at 19:08 and 19:28 to suddenly put Cornell in the game. Devine stopped the next couple of shots as Dartmouth walked away with the 3-2 victory.
Gaudet is now 12-6-1 against Cornell in his 10 years at Dartmouth. The win improved the Big Green to 4-2 overall and 3-2 in the ECACHL. The loss is Cornell's first of the season as the Big Red are now 5-1, 4-1 in the league.
Dartmouth's special teams were up to the task as the Big Green stopped seven Cornell power plays while score two of its own.
Dartmouth will be back at home next weekend with games on Friday and Saturday at 7:00 pm against Yale and Brown.
