HANOVER, NH – A power play goal by David Jones (North Vancouver, B.C.) early in the second period lifted the Dartmouth men's hockey team to a 1-0 victory over the visiting Brown Bears on Saturday night in Thompson Arena. Big Green netminder Mike Devine (Orchard Park, N.Y.) was stellar between the pipes for the second night in a row as the junior recorded 30 saves along with his third career shutout.
With the victory the 13th-ranked Big Green improve to 5-3-0 overall, 4-3-0 in the ECAC Hockey League while Brown drops to 2-3-2, 1-2-1 ECACHL. \
Special teams were key in the game, as Dartmouth went 1-8 on the power play, while Brown was 0-8 with the man-advantage.
The two teams played a scoreless first period of hockey, with Dartmouth having the clear advantage with 16 shots on goal to Brown's six during the 20-minute frame.
The Big Green were awarded back-to-back power-play opportunities early in the second period, including a 33-second 5-on-3 advantage. Dartmouth used just six seconds of the two-man advantage to take a 1-0 lead when Jones beat freshman Dan Rosen stick-side, scoring off a face-off win to Rosen's right at 2:58. Ben Lovejoy (Orford, N.H.) fired across ice to Jones from down-low as Lovejoy notched his fourth assist on the season.
Less than three minutes later, at 5:47, the Bears were awarded a two-man advantage of their own, for 1:05, but Brown could not break through the Big Green defense as the score remained 1-0 in favor of Dartmouth.
Neither team could gain any momentum in the third period. The Bears had a five-minute power play at 7:54 of the third, but Dartmouth was able to kill off the first 4:02 of the penalty, before another whistle on Brown set up 58 seconds of four-on-four action followed by a Big Green power play. But that advantage only lasted eight seconds, as Dartmouth was whistled for another at 13:03, setting up more four-on-four action and another Brown power play.
The Bears pulled the goalie for the extra attacker late in the game. The visitors won two critical offensive zone face-offs in the final 50 seconds, but Devine was up to task stopping all shots.
Rosen finished with 37 saves, while Devine made 30 stops for Dartmouth. Dartmouth continues with ECAC Hockey League action next weekend, hosting Princeton on Nov. 24 at 7:00 pm and then Quinnipiac on Nov. 25 at 7:00 pm.
