HANOVER, N.H. - Nick Johnson's (Calgary, Alta.) goal with seven minutes left in regulation gave the No. 15/15 Dartmouth men's hockey team a 3-3 overtime tie with No. 20 Quinnipiac in Saturday night's ECACHL hockey action. The nationally ranked teams came into Saturday's contest at Thompson Arena in a first place tie in the ECAC Hockey League. The two finished the evening still deadlocked atop the standings.
The Big Green's Dan Shribman (Swampscott, Mass.) gave Dartmouth (5-3-2 overall, 4-3-2 ECACHL) a quick 1-0 lead just two minutes into the contest. Rob Pritchard (Burnaby, B.C.) won the face off passing quickly to Jon Grecu (Calgary, Alta.). Grecu got the puck to Shribman as the senior put his head down and barreled to the net for his third goal of the season.
Quinnipiac (7-4-3 overall, 4-2-2 ECACHL) rallied to score the next two goals of the game. John Doherty finished off a rush into the Dartmouth end at the 9:42 mark. He snapped a shot under the right arm of goalie Mike Devine (Orchard Park, N.Y.) into the net.
Quinnipiac went in front at the 16:28 mark on a power play goal from Jamie Bates. Ben Nelson fed Reid Cashman for a one-timer in the high slot that was kicked aside by Devine. However, he left a rebound that Bates was able to put under the crossbar.
Dartmouth evened it at 2-2 at 8:17 of the second when Tanner Glass (Craven, Sask.) notched his first goal in three games. Johnson earned an assist on the play along with T.J. Galiardi (Calgary, Alta.) who had a pair on the night for his second multiple-point game in a row.
Quinnipiac held a 3-2 lead late in the third period after a marker from Greg Holt just 4:16 into the final frame. Chris Myers threw a puck at the net from the bottom of the left wing circle, and it redirected off Holt into the cage.
However, the Big Green tied the game with exactly seven minutes to play on Johnson's goal. A turnover in the Bobcat end allowed Galiardi and David Jones (North Vancouver, B.C.) to get the puck to Johnson as the junior skated in one-on-one with Quinnipiac netminder Bud Fisher. Neither team could muster a goal in the remaining 12 minutes of action as Dartmouth tallied its second 3-3 tie in as many days.
In the nets, Fisher had 26 saves, including 11 in the opening period, while Devine recorded 21.
Dartmouth will now take a much needed break as the Big Green will not be in action again until an 8:00 pm contest against Harvard on Dec. 15 in Cambridge, Mass. That game will be nationally televised by CSTV.
