CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Three power play goals by Harvard gave the Crimson a 3-2 victory over the Dartmouth men's hockey team at the Bright Hockey Center on Saturday. With the loss the Big Green falls to 5-4-2 overall, 4-4-2 ECACHL while Harvard improves to 4-9-0 and 3-7-0.
Harvard struck first early in the second period as the Crimson went on an extended 5x4 power play. An initial shot by Paul Dufault had the puck saved by Mike Devine (Orchard Park, N.Y.) and shot right back in by Mike Taylor.
A Crimson goal just :44 seconds into the second stanza gave the home team a 2-0 lead. Taylor notched his second and the team's second power play goal of the night.
A third power play strike at 15:28 put Harvard up 3-0 before the Big Green struck with its first goal of tjust :30 seconds later. David Jones (North Vancouver, B.C.) took a pass from T.J. Galiardi (Calgary, Alta.) in the right side circle going high stick side on netminder Justin Tobe. Grant Lewis (Upper St. Clair, Pa.) brought the puck down shooting to Galiardi at center ice, setting up Jones for the goal.
Dartmouth got another one back at 8:50 as Kevin Swallow (Stanwood, Mich.) recorded the first short handed strike of the season for the Big Green. Connor Shields (Edmonton, Alta.) stole the puck from Harvard defenseman Alex Biega at center ice faking Tobe out of the net, passing over to a waiting Swallow for the goal.
Despite the extra man for the final minute and a half of play, the Big Green were unable to get the tying goal.
Devine finished the night with 30 saves while Tobe and Kyle Richter combined for 24 saves.
Dartmouth is now off for the holiday break and will return to action on Dec. 29 and 30 by hosting the Ledyard National Bank Classic. The Big Green will square off with North Dakota in the first game, slated for 7:00 pm. All four games of the tournament will be broadcast live by CN8 Sports, a division of Comcast Television.
