HANOVER, N.H. - Matt Gilroy scored one goal and assisted on another, helping No. 9 Boston University to a 3-0 decision over No. 20 Dartmouth in the consolation game Saturday of the Ledyard National Bank Classic.
The first two periods were scoreless before BU (7-4-5) potted the gamewinner with 10:34 to play in regulation. Luke Popko took a feed from behind the net and his shot from the slot beat Dartmouth goalie Mike Devine to the glove side. Gilroy and Bryan Ewing assisted.
With 3:38 on the clock, Gilroy gave BU an insurance goal for a 2-0 lead before Kevin Schaeffer had an empty-netter with 2:03 to go.
In the nets, Devine made 22 saves for Dartmouth (5-6-2), while Karson Gillespie stopped 21 for BU.
“I thought we battled hard and did some good things. Right now the puck's not going in for us and it comes and goes through out the course of a season for every team,” said head coach Bob Gaudet. “It shows how difficult Division I hockey is. The lack of momentum and not scoring on our power play chances was a big deal for us. We had some good opportunities but it just didn't go.”
Dartmouth is on the road next weekend, traveling to Union and Rensselaer on January 5-6.
NORTH DAKOTA WINS LEDYARD NATIONAL BANK CLASSIC
HANOVER, N.H. - Ryan Duncan scored a pair of third-period goals, pushing North Dakota (9-10-1) to a 4-2 victory over St. Lawrence (9-9-1) in Saturday's championship game of the Ledyard National Bank Classic at Dartmouth.
With the score knotted at 2-2 in the third period, Duncan potted a power play goal at 9:33 and then added some insurance on an empty netter with 34 seconds remaining.
The two teams traded power play goals in the first period. SLU's Kevin DeVergilio struck first at 12:07 before UND tied it on a Ryan Martens' goal about two minutes later.
In the second, Scott Foyt gave North Dakota a 2-1 advantage that held until 3:24 of the third when DeVergilio earned a power play goal for his second of the night, making it 2-2.
In the nets, Alex Petizian of SLU made 28 saves while Philippe Lamoureux of North Dakota had 18 stops.
All-tournament honors went to Lamoureux in goal, and Matt Gilroy of BU and Robbie Bina of North Dakota on defense. The forwards were Brock McBride and DeVergilio of St. Lawrence along with T.J. Oshie of ND. Duncan was tabbed the tourney's MVP.
In the consolation game, Boston University defeated host Dartmouth, 3-0.
