SCHENECTADY, N.Y. ¬ Union racked up two power play goals to defeat the Dartmouth men's hockey team, 4-1 on Friday night in Starr Rink. It was the Dutchmen's first defeat of the Big Green in three tries. With the loss Dartmouth falls to 5-7-2, 4-5-2 in the ECACHL while Union improves to 9-8-2, 2-5-0 ECACHL.
Union was not without its chances early. With Matt Cook coming out of the box he picked up the errant puck and skated down alone on Big Green netminder Mike Devine (Orchard Park, N.Y.). Devine was up to the challenge making a sliding kick save.
Union got on the board however just four minutes later at the 13:00 mark when the puck went sailing by Devine on the glove side. Lane Caffaro gave the Dutchmen the 1-0 lead on the first power play goal the Big Green has given up in its last two games.
David Jones (North Vancouver, B.C.) evened things up for Dartmouth. Jones took the initial shot with the rebound coming out to J.T. Wyman (Wayzata, Minn.). Wyman fired a shot that hit off Union netminder Justin Mrazek's stick and into the back of the net. Tanner Glass (Craven, Sask.) also assisted.
Union broke the dead knot with 3:00 left in the second stanza. Traffic in front of the net allowed Josh Coyle to sneak one past Devine for the 2-1 lead.
The Dutchmen put the game away with another power play strike at 16:20 of the third period. Olivier Bouchard blasted a wrister from the left side circle past an outstretched Devine.
An empty net goal as the clock was expiring would give Union the three-goal lead and 4-1 victory. With 37 shots on goal, Dartmouth is now 1-3-1 when outshooting its opponent as Union had just 27 shots on target.
The story of the night for Dartmouth was power play chances as the Big Green has not scored in its last 48 extra man opportunities, including 0-for-9 in tonight's game.
The Big Green continues its swing through the Capital Region with a 7:00 pm matchup against Rensselaer tomorrow night.
