CHARLESTON, S.C. - After the third and final day of competition at the Intercollegiate Sailing Association National Women's Dinghy Championship on Friday, the Dartmouth sailing team has moved up one spot from sixth place to finish fifth overall. The event was hosted by the College of Charleston at their J. Stewart Walker, Jr. Sailing Complex in the Patriots Point Marina on the Cooper River from May 24-26.
After all 18 races were completed in A division and all 18 races done in B division, the Big Green had amassed a total of 280 points, good for fifth place among the 18 teams in the field. The host College of Charleston won the championship with 207 points with Georgetown second with 249 points. Racing began on the final day at 9:45 a.m. with a westerly breeze of 5-8 mph. After two races had been sailed in A division in the morning, however, racing was halted for an hour due to a lack of wind. Racing resumed at 12:00 p.m. with a southwesterly breeze of 10-13 knots that picked up to 16-18 knots in the afternoon.
Sailing for Dartmouth in A division were senior skipper Emily East (Fairhope, Ala.) who teamed with freshman Kate Hacker (Greenville, Del.) and freshman Kendall Reiley (Marblehead, Mass.). The Big Green placed 10th in A division with 162 points, while Charleston was first with 98 points.
In B division, the Dartmouth contingent included sophomore skipper Adele Wilhelm (Chicago, Ill.), sophomore Betsy Bryant (Tampa, Fla.) and junior Laura Sheinkopf (Melville, N.Y.). The Big Green finished fifth in B division with 118 points, while Stanford was first with 97 points.
Next up for Dartmouth is the ICSA/Gill National Coed Dinghy Championship from May 31-June 2 in Charleston, S.C.
