HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth women's volleyball team captured two wins on the second day of the Dartmouth Invitational held in Leede Arena, with the two victories the Big Green finished in second place behind Harvard who went undefeated in the tournament. Dartmouth (6-6, 0-2) defeated New Jersey Institute of Technology (3-13), 3-0, in its first game and then was victorious over Robert Morris (8-11), 3-1.
In the first game against NJIT the two teams were point-for-point but the Big Green pulled away, going up by as much as 10 to win easily, 30-19. In the second game the Highlanders grabbed the early momentum and lead going up, 7-2. Dartmouth pulled within four with Sandy Barbut (Newport Beach, Calif.) serving. Megan MacGregor (Carlsbad, Calif.) tied the game and gave Dartmouth a one-point lead before Frances Samolowicz (St. Charles, Ill.) padded the cushion as the Big Green won 30-27. Jess Thomas (Tampa, Fla.) started Game Three off for the Big Green by serving five straight points enroute to a 30-18 Dartmouth win.
For the match Thomas and Nadine Parris (Plymouth, Minn.) led the Big Green with 10 and 11 kills respectively while Hirsch was tops with 39 assists. Thomas, Barbut and Amanda Marston (Austin, Texas) all recorded double-digit digs with Parris tops in hitting percentage with a .280.
Against Robert Morris the two teams battled early in the first game before Dartmouth pulled ahead with MacGregor serving up six points for the Big Green at 22-16. The Colonials came back trailing by only three, but Katie Hirsch (Austin, Texas) gave the Big Green another big lead as Dartmouth won 30-23. In the second game RMU took a small lead early, increasing it steadily before Thomas rallied off six straight points to spur the Big Green to a 30-15 win.
In Game Three Robert Morris went up early but Dartmouth mounted a comeback with Barbut serving her team to an 11-11 tie. The two then traded the lead back and forth for the rest of the game before the Colonials were able to jump out to a 24-22 lead enroute to a 30-27 win. Game Four began as a see-saw battle with neither side getting more than a two-point advantage. Thomas shifted the momentum to Dartmouth's side as she served the Big Green to a seven-point lead at 19-12. Dartmouth never relinquished winning easily, 30-19.
For the match Thomas and Morgan Covington (Katy, Texas) led Dartmouth with 13 kills apiece while Hirsch was the lead with 46 assists. Marston led the Big Green with 17 digs while Barbut added 10. Parris again was stellar with a game-high .500 hitting percentage. Dartmouth also outblocked the Colonials 13-9. For their play Parris and Hirsch were named All-Tournament.
Dartmouth opens up a full slate of league games next weekend, hosting Ivy foes Princeton on Friday at 7:00 pm and then Penn on Saturday at 4:00 pm.
