HANOVER, N.H. – A three-point night from senior Katie Weatherston (Thunder Bay, Ont.) lifted the Big Green women's hockey team past Clarkson, 4-1, in tonight's ECACHL match-up.
The first period saw a lot of action in the neutral zone, but nothing heavily threatened either goalie. Both teams had power play opportunities in the period, but could only muster up one shot on goal each. At the end of the first 20 minutes, the Big Green had the slight offensive advantage, leading 6-3 in shots.
The Big Green got on the board first midway through second period, as Sarah Newnam (Lexington, Ky.) blasted a shot from the blue line that was deflected by Weatherston who was positioned in front of the Clarkson net. Weatherston tipped the shot past Knights netminder Kira Hurley, giving Dartmouth a 1-0 lead.
Just seconds later the Big Green went on the power play, as Britney Selina got called for an interference penalty. Dartmouth capitalized on the extra-skater chance, as Weatherston deflected another shot from Cherie Piper (Scarborough, Ont.) between the legs of Hurley.
A defensive breakdown with just one tick remaining on the clock brought the Golden Knights within one. Ashley Shaidle beat Dartmouth goalie Carli Clemis (Taber, Alta.) bringing the score to, 2-1, with one period remaining.
The third period was all Big Green. Maggie Kennedy (West Hartford, Conn.) netted her fourth goal of the season as took a pass from Weatherston on the back post, jamming it past Hurley.
Then at 14:34, Dartmouth extended their lead, as Gillian Apps (Unionville, Ont.) knocked in a rebound from a Sarah Parsons (Dover, Mass.) shot, ending the scoring for the night and giving the Big Green a , 4-1, win.
Dartmouth out shot the Golden Knights, 31-16, on the night, as they extend their record to 13-1-1 in the ECACHL. With the loss, Clarkson falls to 6-8-1.
The Big Green skate again tomorrow afternoon, as they host St. Lawrence at Thompson Arena. Puck drops at 4:00 p.m.
