HANOVER, N.H. – Captain Gillian Apps (Unionville, Ont.) scored the game-tying goal with 18 seconds left in regulation, then followed up with the overtime winner to push the No. 3 ranked Big Green women's hockey team past No. 6 St. Lawrence, 5-4, at Thompson Arena.
St. Lawrence got on the board first at 6:34 of the first period, when Chelsea Grills blasted a shot on Dartmouth netminder Carli Clemis (Taber, Alta.). The quivering puck tipped off Clemis' glove and fell just in front the goal line, before Sabrina Harbec jammed it past, giving the Saints a, 1-0, lead.
Just three minutes later, Caroline Ethier (Matagami, Que.) evened the score for the Big Green taking the puck coast-to-coast, then tearing a shot into the upper left corner of the goal past Meaghan Guckian.
Forty-eight seconds later, Dartmouth took the outright lead, as Katie Weatherston (Thunder Bay, Ont.) and Shannon Bowman (Leamington, Ont.) moved into the Saints zone on a 2-on-1. A swift pass from Weatherston found the tape of Bowman who buried it past a sprawled out Guckian for the lead.
The Big Green out shot St. Lawrence, 14-7, in the opening period.
At 4:28 of the second, Dartmouth extended their lead, when Ethier netted her second of the game on a wrist shot that beat Guckian between the legs.
Relentless St. Lawrence pressure produced their second goal of the night with just a minute left in the second period. Kerri Wallace found the back of the net on a rip from the blue line on the power play, bringing the Saints within a goal with one period left to play.
The Scarlet and Brown wasted no time in the final stanza, as Carson Duggan netted her 18th goal of the season just 56 seconds into the period, evening the score at three apiece.
Then midway through the period, Grills gave the Saints their first lead of the night, as she picked up a loose rebound and slammed it past Clemis, putting the Big Green into a pressure situation.
With time winding down, Coach Mark Hudak was forced to pull Clemis for the extra-skater advantage. The gamble paid off at 19:42, when Apps slammed home a rebound, tying the game at fours and sending the game to overtime.
At 2:42 of the extra session, Cherie Piper (Scarborough, Ont.) strung Apps on a breakaway. The senior moved in on Guckian, but was denied on the initial chance. Her rebound sat on the right post for a second before she jammed it in, sealing the win for the Big Green in dramatic fashion.
With the win, Dartmouth improves to 14-1-1 in the league, while the Saints drop to 12-4-0. The squad begins a four-game road trip next weekend when they travel to Rensselaer and Union.
