HANOVER, N.H. - With a three-goal first period the Dartmouth (3-1, 2-1 ECAC Hockey) men's hockey team shut out Union (2-3-2, 0-1-2 ECAC Hockey), 4-0, on Friday in the Big Green's home opener.
Scott Fleming (Plainfield, Ont.) recorded several collegiate firsts with a multiple-point game, scoring a goal and an assist. Senior netminder
Mike Devine (Orchard Park, N.Y.) had his fifth career shutout saving all 29 Dutchmen shots.
Dartmouth started things off with a bang firing at will resulting in four straight shots on goal as
Nick Johnson (Calgary, Alta.) opening the scoring just 1:56 into the period. An early power play opportunity for the Big Green had three shots on net before Fleming took a shot pulling the goalie to the far side of the net as Johnson was there for the follow-through and his third goal of the season.
Union had a chance to tie it up but
Jonathan Wolter (Branford, Conn.), playing in his first collegiate game, blocked the shot before it ever reached Devine.
A hard working
Connor Shields (Edmonton, Alta.) spotted his team to a two-goal lead at 13:54 with the sevemth goal of his career, first of the season.
Then at 15:14 a clear out by
Evan Stephens (Bessemer, Mich.) just two minutes later had Fleming there for the strike to give the Big Green a three-goal lead.
The second stanza was pretty even as neither side was able to gain an advantage. In the third the Dutchmen had several opportunity to get on the board but Devine was up to the challenge as he made several acrobatic saves down low. The Dartmouth defenders were also on their game as the Big Green blocked eight shots by Union.
Joe Gaudet (Etna, N.H.) potted his first of the season as he,
Rob Smith (Brooks, Alta.) and
Peter Boldt (Greenwich, Conn.) combined for Dartmouth final goal with four minutes left to play.
Union outshot the Big Green, 29-26 but was 0-for-4 on the power play. Dartmouth went 2-for-4 with the extra man. Two Dutchmen netminders combined for 22 saves as Justin Mrazek started the game and was chased to allow Corey Milan to finish the contest.
The Big Green is back in action tomorrow night in a 7:00 pm matchup with Rensselaer at Thompson Arena.
