Johnathan Ball, a senior captain on the Big Green men's basketball team, was presented with a Dean of the College Award for Service on Wednesday, November 28. The award, which recognizes and honors students for contributions that broadly benefit the Dartmouth community, that bring members of the community together and that strive to honor the college's Principle of Community, was also presented to six other students in a ceremony held in Baker Library's Treasure Room
Ball, a four-year member of the men's basketball team and co-captain for the second year, has won the team's Defensive Player of the Year award for three consecutive years, along with an award for hustle, drive, determination, outstanding attitude and work ethic. That award is fitting because that is the same approach that he takes to his involvement in the community outside of the classroom and off the court.
During his sophomore year Ball became the first Dartmouth College student-athlete to be selected to serve as the Ivy League's representative on the NCAA Division I National Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). Ball was also the student-athlete representative on the NCAA Men's Basketball Issues Committee throughout his term, where he worked alongside administrator's, from presidents and athletics directors, as well as coaches to address a range of issues impacting the collegiate game of basketball, including student-athlete welfare. Outside of his commitment to the National SAAC, Ball held the responsibility of being Dartmouth College's SAAC representative to the Ivy SAAC.
Throughout his time at Dartmouth, Ball has been willing on many occasions to speak on behalf of student-athletes to various audiences including administrators, alumni and friends' groups; at events ranging from the annual Sponsor's picnic, to the Dartmouth Athletic Council and the Alumni Council Committee on athletics. At the same time he's served as an incredible ambassador and role model for and to students of color, supporting the college's recruitment and retention efforts through activities during Dimension's weekend, and involvement in the Gospel Choir, Dartmouth Black Business Association and Afro-American Society.
Ball is also a 2008 Class Representative in the Hill Winds Society, where he acts as a liaison between the student and alumni bodies by raising awareness of pertinent issues. Through his involvement in Hill Winds he helped with events on campus such as their golf tournament, trivia night and homecoming events.
Ball has managed all these various service and leadership roles while also working on campus, most recently for ESPN/Sports Ticker as a reporter during football games and with Student-Athlete Academic Services as a CHAMPS/Lifeskills Intern.
According to men's basketball coach
Terry Dunn, “Johnathan welcomes the responsibility of being a highly visible student on campus and has the maturity, focus and self-respect to handle the pressure that it comes with, while performing at a high level in all the other facets of his life here at Dartmouth. This is and of itself provides a great service to not only the men's basketball program, the student-athlete population, athletic department, student body and college as a whole.”
The Dean of the College Award for Service has been in existence since 2004. The common thread in the award winners is that their efforts represent contributions that are above and beyond work usually expected of students in their roles as student leaders, members of organizations or employees, and can be made through their connections with a variety of departments, teams, clubs, residence halls or community projects.
